Nagoya City | Temporary designated-bag measure runs through October 30 (Fri); use designated bags from November 2 (Mon)

Summary

Because the supply of designated bags became unstable due to the tense situation in the Middle East, Nagoya City has been running a temporary measure since May 25, 2026 (Mon) that allows household garbage and recyclables to be put out in bags other than the designated bags. After checking sales at retailers in each ward and production by several manufacturers, the city has judged that a stable supply is secured, and the temporary measure will run through October 30, 2026 (Fri) and then end. From November 2 (Mon), please use the designated bags for household garbage and recyclables.

Key Points from the Official Notice

  • According to Nagoya City’s official notice, the temporary measure allowing bags other than the designated bags runs through October 30, 2026 (Friday) and then ends.
  • From November 2 (Monday), put out household garbage and recyclables in the designated bags.
  • For recyclables, as before, a colorless transparent bag of 45 liters or less that your household no longer needs can also be used.
  • The city asks residents to plan to use up, no later than October 30 (Friday), any colorless transparent or semi-transparent bags already bought for the temporary measure, or to use them for other purposes.
  • The city continues to ask residents not to buy excessive amounts of designated bags.

The temporary measure through October 30 (Fri)

The contents of the temporary measure announced by the city on June 25, 2026 are as follows (the city’s September 30 notice gives the end date and how to put out garbage from November 2).

  • Only if you cannot obtain the designated bags for household garbage and recyclables, you may use a colorless transparent bag or a semi-transparent bag (only one whose contents are easily visible), 10 to 45 liters in size.
  • For Burnable Garbage and Non-burnable Garbage, attach a paper reading “可燃ごみ” (Burnable Garbage) or “不燃ごみ” (Non-burnable Garbage) to the bag, or write it clearly on the bag. Recyclables do not need a “資源” (Recyclables) label.
  • Bags that will not be collected: colored bags such as plastic shopping bags or milky-white bags (including designated bags for business waste), Burnable/Non-burnable Garbage bags without the label, other municipalities’ designated bags, and paper bags or cardboard boxes.

Bags from November 2 (Mon)

  • Burnable Garbage: Nagoya City’s designated household burnable garbage bags (10, 20 or 45 liters)
  • Non-burnable Garbage: Nagoya City’s designated household non-burnable garbage bags (10, 20 or 45 liters)
  • Recyclables (plastic resources, paper containers/packaging and mixed paper, PET bottles, glass bottles and cans) and hazardous flammable items (spray cans, cassette gas cylinders, disposable lighters, etc.): designated recyclables bags. A colorless transparent bag of 45 liters or less that your household no longer needs can also be used. Semi-transparent bags cannot be used (since April 2024).
  • Batteries: as before, a colorless transparent bag (the city’s designated bags and semi-transparent bags cannot be used).
  • Each type of the city’s designated bags is for its own use only. For example, household non-burnable garbage bags or recyclables bags cannot be used for Burnable Garbage.
