Summary
In response to frequent fires caused by lithium-ion batteries and other hazardous waste, Matsudo City has created dedicated “Hazardous Waste Bags” (yuugai gomi bukuro) and is distributing them free of charge at public facilities and other locations in the city. The city encourages residents to use these bags when putting out hazardous waste.
Key Points from the Official Announcement
- According to the city, the dedicated bags were created “to promote proper sorting” because fires caused by hazardous waste such as lithium-ion batteries have occurred frequently.
- Distribution locations include City Hall, branch offices, community centers and clean centers, as well as post offices in the city, most Lawson stores, two 7-Eleven stores, Unidy Matsudo Tokiwadaira, and — since November 2025 — four electronics retailers (K’s Denki, Joshin and two Yamada Denki stores).
- There is no limit on the number of bags, but residents are asked to take only what they need. The bags are for household waste only and cannot be used for business waste.
- If you do not have the dedicated bag, you can instead use a clear or translucent plastic bag clearly labeled “有害ごみ” (hazardous waste). Black plastic bags, the city’s designated bags for burnable waste, and bags from other municipalities cannot be used.
- Hazardous waste covers dry-cell and coin batteries, mobile batteries, e-cigarettes, electric shavers, electric toothbrushes, handheld fans, wireless earphones, lighters (use up the contents), mercury thermometers, compact fluorescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
- Collection is once a week (the same day as non-burnable and recyclable waste); put the bag out at your collection point by 8:30 a.m. on collection day.
What Residents Should Check
- The nearest distribution location for the bags (city hall, branch offices, community centers, post offices, participating convenience stores and electronics retailers)
- Tie the bag closed securely and check that it is not torn before putting it out
- Button batteries (LR/SR/PR types) cannot be put out as hazardous waste — insulate the terminals with tape and take them to a collection can at a participating store
- Swollen rechargeable batteries can also be put out as hazardous waste
